Soundwalk Collective & Patti Smith - Peradam (Brian Eno Remix)

  • An eerie but alluring—and classic, '80s-style—Eno remix.

  • Since 2019, New York group Soundwalk Collective have collaborated with Patti Smith on a trilogy of albums of experimental spoken word sound art inspired by the work of writers like Rimbaud and Arnaud. Now label Bella Union is re-releasing them all with an accompanying remix album, which includes this hair-raising Brian Eno remix. The original "Peradam" was a smouldering seven minute build-up—this one flattens out into a frightening four minutes of rumbling and uncomfortable frequencies, the voices turned glassy and pallid. It sounds like some of his most cerebral work, like Ambient 4: On Land, a style of ambient far removed from the pleasant, background-music records that inspired the genre. It's more ambient in the sense that it sounds like it's picking up the sounds of a room where some occult ritual is about to begin.
