Portable - Ripple Effect (Call Super Remix)

  • The rare rework that highlights the talent of both artist and remixer, and one of the best Call Super tracks ever.

  • Alan Abrahams' My Sentient Shadow was one of this year's sweetest surprises, with philosophical lyrics daubed against jazzy synth pop backgrounds. The new remix EP is somehow nearly as strong, with excellent turns from Patrice Scott and DJ Qu, but it's Call Super who really leans into the original album's genius and adds his own splashes of colour. The UK artist stretches "Ripple Effect"—the LP's most memorable hook—into a nine-minute meander through bouncy drum patterns, trippy effects, quirky synths and vocal cut-ups, with all the elegant patience and creativity of his best work. The remix reminds me of some of the finest Call Super moments, like Suzi Ecto, especially in how it drunkenly moves between passages. (The disco bassline around four minutes in is perfection.) But it wouldn't be the same without Abrahams' vocal or his original sultry song, a true mind-meld of a remix that feels like a high-water mark for both Call Super and Portable.
