  • Production outfit and record label Dungeon Meat—the brainchild of Brawther and Tristan de Cunha—prides itself on stripped-back, hard-hitting house cuts. The project's rather brutal objective is "to make people's heads snap off their necks," and their latest project thinks outside the box without losing that core focus. Last year, the duo shared an Enter The Dungeon sample pack, giving producers a simple task: build them into a track fit to destroy dance floors around the world. Enter The Dungeon, the 12-inch, features four tracks chosen from 80 submissions, unearthing new talent in the world of brawny house. Run through Brawther's 12-bit Sequential Circuits 440 sampler to ensure maximum grit, the samples were raw and unpolished to begin with, which only adds to the sweaty vibe and heavy-duty weight of these chunky house-garage fusions. The EP kicks off with Berlin-based producer Snad's minimal tech house groove "Pure Veg," which bristles with tinny sound FX, metallic clangs and snappy snare fills evocative of garage classics like DJ Luck & MC Neat's "Poison." The dense, upbeat "Nice To Meat You," from Parisian producer and Situation Records co-founder Oward, keeps up the energy, but its low, grumbling subs take it somewhere darker than the friendliness of the title might imply. On the flip, things take a trip to some dank London basement with a couple of garage heaters. Brussels beatmaker Enrico Dragoni, AKA 2HOT2HANDLE, offers up a track that fizzes with high-tempo percussion, keyboard stabs and soaring synths. Shifting into the margins of UK garage, it underlines the freedom given to each producer to stray down different paths, while still maintaining a core quality of raw, punchy deep house that connects the whole project. A 12-inch designed for the dingiest dance floors, Enter The Dungeon pushes the distinctively beefy Dungeon Meat sound, while showcasing the scope and variety that talented producers can squeeze out of a few gritty samples.
