Jubilee - sunscreen

  • Miami bass and electro for sweaty summer nights.

  • Jubilee has time for pretty much any dance music style or subgenre you could name, but when it really comes down to it, her Florida roots always shine through. This new single represents the first in a series of seasonal releases, with this one paying homage to summer (obviously). These two tracks take Miami bass as the foundation for glossy but minimalist club music, with the sense of humour and dance floor abandon that colours everything the American producer does. "sunscreen," despite the name, feels made more for sweaty summer nights than cocktails by the pool. The sparse and spacious drum pattern feels very old-school Miami bass (especially with that cute little cowbell), but the toughened-up drop and classic rave stabs take it from retro pastiche to classic Jubilee hybridism. The B-side, "wrong number," is built from similar bones, but the goofy touch-tone phone samples and vocal samples—a deadpan "you have the wrong number"—have a glint of bloghouse. It's a mischievous touch that Jubilee has mastered, where others might veer off into full-on into novelty track territory.
