  • On "French Lessons," Mykki Blanco attempts to isolate love at its most saccharine stage. It's a swooning affair where Blanco and Kelsey Lu call and respond like lovers in a wistful dialogue. Blanco talk-sings with a Lou Reed swagger while the classically-trained Lu brings the vocal presence of an entire quartet. Ethereal production from frequent collaborator FaltyDL perches the vocals atop a cloud of resonating bass synths and tender chords. Blanco described the track as "a reflection on the possibility of true love, on the notion that one truly can experience what we see in the Hollywood films," the antithesis to the sorrow and desperation of last year's excellent Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep—proof that we can always get back up, no matter how high the drop.
