  • Tuareg artist Mdou Moctar, whose music famously circulated through a network of cellphones around the Sahara, tapped some of the African continent's most innovative producers to remix his show-stopping Afrique Victime album from last year. From Rey Sapienz to Jay Mitta, most contributors embellish Moctar's guitar with trap and glitchy club influences. Kenyan noise-metal duo Duma, true to their chaotic style, completely re-imagine the original track. After a minute-long introduction that faintly incorporates Moctar's chords, elements of industrial techno—skittery drums, thick low-end frequencies and ghastly vocal screeches—kick in. It's an unsettling yet fascinating showcase of sludgy textures as well as Duma's ability to forge new sounds out of power electronics, doom metal and drone, which never ceases to amaze.
