Swan Meat - Perfect Cherry Blossom

  • Swan Meat's music moves at a mile a minute, switching gears and introducing jarring new textures what feels like every few seconds. But even by her own standards, "Perfect Cherry Blossom"—and Blood Supernova, the EP it comes from—feels overwhelming, starting off as orchestral hardcore techno before launching into serrated drum & bass, with overdriven synth melodies and laser-gun melodies firing off every which way around the rhythm. 8-bit synths give the impression of an old Sega Genesis platformer gone haywire, and the mischievous melodies (while we're talking video games, imagine the evil ice cream truck from Twisted Metal) add a hint of levity. Still, the pressure builds up unbearably before a trunk-rattling breakdown with a vocal fry-shredded spoken word section that ends the whole thing with a touch of camp and a flash of blinding light. And that's only the first track.
