  • From her splashy, nostalgic artwork to releases like TDJ BBY, a mixtape of Eurodance remixes of everyone from Yellowcard to Juicy J, Montreal artist TDJ zeroes in on the pleasure centers of a very specific but broadly appealing sound: the mainstream crossover dance music of the late '90s and '00s. Think Love Inc, ATB, La Bouche—acts that bottled the almost transcendent physicality of dance music with straight pop hooks. "Sway (The Places She Goes)" could've easily been a hit many moons ago, with its sculpted synths that wrap around the music like a warm hug, but still push it forward. The melody is bittersweet, the lyrics ineffably melancholy. It's ostensibly a song about losing yourself on the dance floor, but what led to that need? The conflicting feelings are only amplified on the excellent "Breakcore Remix" (which, really, just sounds like jungle to me), where TDJ's voice is sped up to helium heights and her wordless chorus does pirouettes over the breakbeats, catching the same universal high of the music she's paying homage to.
