Nico - Everyone Sees But Only A Few Know

  • Tantalizingly ambiguous—but rhythmically powerful—club music with ASMR-inducing textures.

  • There's an eerie feeling of danger lurking around every corner of Everyone Sees But Only A Few Know, but the reckless feeling is tamed by the otherworldliness of Mexican artist Nico's productions. He returns to his own label, Akita Club, with a four-track EP that gently, yet abruptly, unfolds into a sonic maze. It's a genre-hopping adventure that blends together industrial music and ambient with complex drums and kaleidoscopic loops. Alien noises, flange effects, gritty, dubbed-out vocals and abrupt, improvised-sounding melodies—Nico's toolbox might seem like a mess at first, but he keeps things in line with a careful touch, mixing together the strange and familiar. In "Slip," metallic clanks and industrial stomps crash against slick arpeggios that, isolated, could soundtrack Tron. The creepiness of Nico's multi-layered drums and subtle melodies are revisited in "Tripia," whose tribal percussion is accompanied by stealthy sirens that grow in intensity towards the end of the track. With both fast and slow-paced drumming, there's an organic, breathe-in-breathe-out approach to, "Unhal," adding to an ear-tingling atmosphere that includes rattlesnake noises and squelchy water drops. "Plana" features the same intricate sounds but floats along almost like muzak—like a rainforest spa—thanks to its vivid piano and gentler beat. In Everyone Sees But Only a Few Know, Nico bends nature and machine sounds towards each other, giving an uncanny feel to his unique brand of industrial-strength electronic music.
