- Bad With Phones' original "Living & Surfing" sounds like an artist going to Berlin for the first time and taking everything in: a strange mix of modern-day electroclash, techno and hip-hop. Who better to dismantle its idiosyncrasies than Actress? His remix of "Living & Surfing" feels like both a remarkable example of synergy and one of those versions where the remixer basically throws everything out. It's in the spirit of the original more than in the sound.
So we get clips of "Living & Surfing"'s neurotic talk singing—"hate you / shit you / fuck you"—spliced over passages of Actress trying on different beats. It starts out with a fidgety shuffle before approximating something like electro, and then a rhythm pitched halfway between dubstep and hip-hop (my favorite part of the track). As usual, most of the sounds are tinny and bitcrushed, with monstrous bass underneath, a trip back to the world of Splazsh. It's kind of a mess, but there's a logic to its twists and turns, and an addictive grit to its textures. In other words, it's Actress perfection that shows off an intriguing new voice in the process.
