Unknown Artist - Spacerace (OOO001)

  • Afterhours minimal madness with a cheeky Amber vocal sample.

  • Out Of Office is a new label meant to capture the feeling of finally being able to set your OOO—maybe even permanently. Each release comes with a comic following the travails of a three-eyed DJ with a soul-crushing dayjob. But what of the music? The first vinyl-only release features two long-form edits, and A-side "Spacerace" is my pick for choice cut. Buoyed by an insistent hi-hat, the nearly eight-minute track wiggles its way through various psychedelic passages, as hints of vocal (from Amber's "Sexual (Li Da Di)) and acidic squiggles pass through like cars whizzing by in the other direction on the freeway. It's the balance between druggy minimalism and anthemic crossover moments that really makes "Spacerace" pop, as each new texture or fragment of melody feels vibrant, almost neon against the track's steady, workmanlike rhythm. Hypnotic but scintillating in all the right places, this is the kind of thing you'd put on to whip tired, long-partied legs back into overdrive—that time of the morning when you put your out-of-office on because you know you won't be going to work anytime soon.
