Jade - Made Of Steel/Stars

  • Hailing from Budapest in Hungary, Jade is known for his work on drum'n'bass labels like Moving Shadow, Black Sun Empire and Spawn. For his debut into the realm of breaks, (technically since drum'n'bass is itself a variant of breakbeat, he hasn't debuted at all - just dropped the tempo!) Cyberfunk head honcho DJ Quest has green lighted his latest platter comprised of Made Of Steel and Stars. Side A. Made Of Steel Upon hearing the title, you'd expect this tune to be tough and hard, retain its elasticity and rust when exposed to water. I can safely vouch for the first category as Jade has continued on with Cyberfunk's tradition of heavy, bassline oriented tunes and starts off with a hard hitting breakbeat and dark, drawn out bass and synth melodies. It reaches a quick climax before getting into the breakdown where it introduces an echoey tech hook and from there it begins a rollercoaster ride of heavy bass lines, electro squelches. In the current trend of tear-out breaks, the beats are a crossover between the sounds of drum'n'bass and breaks and has Questy himself quoted as saying it "is one of the closest examples of the sound I love in breaks" Side AA. Stars (feat Matt-U) Jade teams up with his drum'n'bass pal Matt-U for the flip and if there was any tune in breaks that closely resembled the deep techy sounds of drum'n'bass then this would probably be it (hearing it reminds me of Inner City Life) - stirring synth sweeps, crisp breakbeats, sweet atmospherics... man that's just the intro. Once the meat of the tune hits you, it becomes a stark contrast in mood and direction as they drop a really dark bassline, beef up the drums a little bit and that's not all. After a short interlude, they combine the two styles together. Whoa! Next up on Cyberfunk is another new artist in the form of Locust and Quest will follow on after that... don't say I didn't warn you!
