Polygonia - Bloom

  • Elegant techno to soothe the soul.

  • Of all the newer deep techno artists to come through in recent years, Polygonia is one of the finest producers—and Aaron Jen one of the finest DJs—so a collaboration for Jen's label Sure Thing comes with high expectations. Sonically, Bloom has more in common with house music or ambient than it does techno. There's little in the way of muscle. Polygonia favors a delicate, melodic approach with her wispy vocals deployed over subtle, probing rhythms. Clocking in at a languid 105 BPM, the opener "Dreaming Trees" is almost ritualistic. Rubbery percussion snakes in and out of the kicks while synthesized organic sounds conjure natural surroundings. With respect for the EP's laid-back nature, Forest Drive West's remix reinforces the original just enough to carry an early hours dance floor. Though dialling up the tempo to a regular dance floor clip, the title track remains subdued. "Coleus," on the other hand, is overflowing with the kinds of jittery micro-rhythms you might find in a minimal house set. Like all the music on this EP, it will take a masterful DJ to tease out its full, tears-on-the-dance-floor potential.
