Astrolith - Savings feat. Cadence Weapon & Rahm

  • Old-school hip-hop, bright arpeggios and deep house vibes abound in this excellent new single on Jubilee's Magic City label.

  • "Porte Rouge," from Astrolith's 2012 EP Utility Food, is a strange chimera. There he moves from Skrillex-style brostep to space disco before ending with an IDM melody over EDM-sized snare rolls. The song is a pretty good summary of the restlessness of the Southern California producer's approach, so it's nice to hear him more focused on his latest single, "Savings." Skittering arpeggios dance under the smooth-as-butter bars from Toronto's Cadence Weapon (clock this one: "I make socialist references / but paid in full is my preference") and Rahm's shouts. This (fairly) straightforward structure means that when Astrolith does reprise his genre tricks, they hit all the harder—cue the goosebumps from those deep house pads.
