  • Some club tracks hit so hard and so unabashedly nutty that you're not sure whether to gasp or laugh. That's how I felt the first time I heard "FSOTM Anthem," an outrageous dubstep(ish) tune that seems engineered to get the biggest reaction out of a knowing crowd. First there's the elastic drums and then the gruff vocal sample that repeats "make you function! make you function!"—seems pretty silly already. But then a truly remarkable LFO bassline (imagine a futuristic, chrome-plated version of "Spongebob") rolls into earshot, wibbling and wobbling across the stereo spectrum like a slippery handful of liquid mercury. It's one of the most addictive and instantly gratifying tracks I've heard all year. But that's not the only treat on this fourth release from aya and BFTT's YCO label. (That's "yes come on.") The flipside, "Finola Shake," gestures towards Henzo's previous reggaeton-leaning work, though it still boasts an exaggerated bass line—this time whomping down from the sky like a falling coconut—and occasional rave stabs to put a pep in its step. "Finola Shake" is adventurous UK club fusion, though even that feels "normal" in the wake of Florentino and Manuka Honey's bonkers remix of both tracks combined into one "Finola Anthem." Remixing two tunes at once might seem like a gimmick, but the duo take the best of both worlds and latch it onto a wonky, falling-over-itself guarachero rhythm, reinforcing the track with a knife-edged bassline and a stuttering lead that tips it over into dub territory. "Finola Anthem" feels like 100 things at once, all of them exciting. And that's basically how the YCO crew roll all the time.
