  • Following up his highly rated Number Cruncher EP from late 2004 - an EP which found its way into the record boxes of the Plump DJs and many other respected breakbeat acts - Hook'n'Sling returns to Australian breakbeat label Hussle & Bussle with a double platter of deep electro-infused breakers, Vegas Heat and Silver Service. Side A. Vegas Heat Vegas Heat kicks off with a punchy synth intro accompanied with sirens and deep monotonic bass. Hook & Sling keeps the tune true to breakbeat with a well programmed break using lots of syncopation in the kicks. The first beatdrop introduces an 80's electro-poppy synth line with random stabs of vinyl scratches, vocal cuts and techy sweeps thrown in for good measure. Towards the end, the tune becomes more manic as the sirens play a bigger part as well as some heavy bass drops. Side B. Silver Service Silver Service brings things down to a more serious and darker tone. The break is a more percussive affair then Vegas Heat with lots of offbeat rimshots and cowbell hits. The bassline is quite similar to Alter Ego's Rocker which is a very growly affair and follows similar notation. On top of this a cut up female vocal hook is laid down and is coupled with sinister arpeggios. In some ways it's reminiscent of the current sounds of Soul Of Man mixed with that Alter Ego bassline.
