Dusky - Lost In You feat. Janai (Herbert's Lost Dub)

  • Herbert dusts off a decade-old Dusky ballad and turns it into one of his impeccable house slow-burners.

  • Taken from the album that helped catapult Dusky to stardom, the newly-reissued Stick By This—over ten years old now, "Lost In You" showcased the duo's keen pop-leaning instincts. The performance from Janai is impassioned and hooky, more than just a guest feature on a dance song, and Dusky built up something of a trance-techno power ballad around her. The original remains one of their greatest achievements. Herbert's remix, which is apparently new despite the "lost dub" tag, gives it a run for its money. Much like DJ Koze did for Herbert himself in 2013, the UK producer transforms "Lost In You" into a gloriously slow-burning house track, full of the tactile and lifelike sounds he's become famous for. The trance undertones and more saccharine elements of the original are pulled apart into constituent pieces—a reversed note there, a flourish here—over one of those timeless, engaging snare-hat patterns that has defined Herbert's work since the '90s. Like Dusky's original, Herbert's version of "Lost In You" cycles through several passages, this time over 11 minutes, but it never loses sight of its thumping house heartbeat, a flickering sign of life that stays steady through all the melancholy. I'm not speaking lightly when I say this sounds like it could be an outtake from Bodily Functions. Some remixes are mere task work, while others are masterpieces that can wring out new shades of brilliance from their source material. I can't say which of those options Herbert felt like he was working with here, but the results are inarguable.
