  • On his second EP for Brazil-via-New York label Tijolo Records, Brazilian producer Roniere Santos presents some tough sonic weaponry inspired by his years living in São Paulo and Diadema, the bedroom suburb where he grew up. The 20-something artist has garnered attention in the last few years with a couple of singles (and mixes) that embrace a darkly-tinted blend of electro, techno and baile funk. On his latest release, he applies this sound to a template of noisy synth sounds, samples and raw club beats made as a reflection of the oppressive skyscrapers and maze-like favelas of his city. Santos' focus sways between dusky textures and a captivating patchwork of rhythms. It's a careful tightrope walk in tracks like the electro cut "Mente e Drama," an overwhelming wave of multilayered kick drums and snappy keys, or "Linha de Ofício," a post-dubstep turn that fuses flanged breakbeats, noisy basslines and post-punk vocals. When RHR wants to tackle the dance floor, he highlights hard-edged sounds like growling motorcycle engines or distorted horns of the classic "Volt Mix" rhythm (also known as tamborzão) as he does in "Na Captura." Even more contemplative tracks, like "Proibidão" or "Sem Sono" are still heavy, the stomping kicks carefully filtered while square waves are sculpted into undulating synth lines. RHR's music sets a concrete jungle mood of tension and alarm, and Linha de Ofício 93" offers no escape from it.
