  • Elon Battle's :3LON alias engages with all things fantasy, from tracks invoking cyberspace to songs sprawling across imaginary medieval landscapes. On this first release on their freshly-minted PLUR.net label, the Baltimore artist lights up the right side of their brain, riffing on quantum physics. Despite the subject matter, there's an endearing simplicity to "Quantum Leaping" that allows :3LON's velveteen falsetto to take command. Though the verses detail a relationship's heated, multi-dimensional impasse—"We're waist deep in / Quantum leaping / New dimension / Split the tension," they're delivered with the drowsy, pared-back cadence of a lullaby, a flow ultimately invigorated by various octaves of :3LON's soulful melisma as the cut progresses. The track's downcast lyrics, nods to hip-hop, (the production employs an instantly recognizable, pitched-up sample from Ludacris's 2010 single "How Low") and moony electronics (varying scruffy jungle breaks, and plucky, digitized harp lend the track the lurid ambiance of a retro video game) recall Kelela at the height of her Hallucinogen era. And that's no faint praise.
