Blue Hawaii - L.O.V.E.

  • Every time Canadian duo Blue Hawaii reconvene, they sound more polished and professional than the last time. It's a fun journey to watch. On "L.O.V.E.," the first single from next year's EP My Bestfriend's House, they strut into disco territory, with a hint of freestyle. In this slightly more restrained, almost retro context, vocalist Raphaelle Standell-Preston avoids the acrobatic runs of some past work and sticks to a clipped, perky vocal that blooms like an orchid in the chorus. With its acoustic-electronic palette of ropey bass and guitar, it reminds me of some of Roisin Murphy's recent work, but those cheeky little sound effects and bright, expansive vocal production—and that sax run that end, half goofy, half anthemic—are what makes it a Blue Hawaii banger.
