Various Artists - Thee Church Ov Acid House: Volume 1

  • An excellent Psychic TV-inspired compilation of quirky acid house on Golden Pudel's in-house label.

  • The latest record from Pudel Produkte, the label arm of Hamburg's infamous Golden Pudel Club, has no press text beyond some breathless DJ feedback. "Sounds like Burial who listened to Psychic TV instead of UK garage," writes Superdefekt. "...How did you find them, do they come from Mainz or the surrounding area or what?" The question is telling, as none of the "artists" on Thee Church Ov Acid House: Volume 1 are easily placed. In fact, the compilation seems to be a tribute to the fake V/A sets released by Psychic TV in the early '90s with the stated goal of propagating the acid house sound. It's a great gimmick, but these tracks stand on their own anyways. Highlights include a relentless cut from Ultra House, "Chewing Gum," which mixes rapidfire vocal samples, a bludgeoning kick and a rude sample in the manner of Shadowax's 2018 banger "A & B." Then there's the sleazy old-school downtempo track from Tyson, "G Phunk." Only issue is that both tracks clock in under two minutes. Get the loop function ready.
