  • "For me, [jouissance] represents an obsessional energy, a frustration in finding the funk," Harvey Sutherland says of the title of his new single, named for the term coined by Lacan for an unfulfillable desire or drive for pleasure. But I'd argue that the Australian producer goes straight to the nerve centers here, and succeeds. Augmenting his usual disco house funk with a Krautrock-inspired motorik rhythm section—and some delightfully retro-sounding synths—he touches on something that feels timeless and universal, a kind of fidgety funk that finds new melodies, hooks and emotional peaks as it searches for an end that will never come. Coming out the other end of the pandemic swinging for the fences, "Jouissance" feels like a new beginning for an artist who was already near the top of his game.
