  • Kai Alcé's unique place in dance music history has given him a breadth of musical strains to draw from. His taste and style are widely revered, and his label NDATL Muzik is an outward reflection of his deep, multi-metropolis sound. The latest release comes from fellow old-school Detroiter Claude Young. Widely known as one of the most prominent (and startlingly skilled) second-wave techno artists, The Knife EP sees him shifting into a house lane. As a seasoned producer it's not surprising that Young's tracks sound full, with hard-hitting grooves that give DJs plenty to work with. The title cut is a bouncing hi-tech soul stomper with snapping snares and jazzy synth stabs. "No Regrets" has deep pads and vocal samples that weave around a heavy beat, eventually giving way to a hype futuristic melody. More pads and vocal snippets come with "Santa Barbara" on the flip. A thick oscillating bassline keeps it grounded while melodic elements move in and out of the mix. Closing out is "Promenade," a track with roaring sub-bass and a soulful chord progression. With all tracks coming in at over five minutes, these are great tools for the long-form, groove-focused DJ. The Knife, though nothing groundbreaking, stands as a solid deep house offering from a legend, full of tracks that, in the right hands, will get dance floors bumping.
