Levon Vincent - Cosmic Enchantment

  • Not so long ago, a Levon Vincent record on Novel Sound was an event. His run in the early 2010s is the stuff of legend, resulting in some of the defining dance floor tracks of the decade—"Double Jointed Sex Freak," "Rainstorm II" and so on. "Enchanted Cosmos," the New York-raised, Berlin-based artist's latest single, hits those same stratospheric heights. Everyone knows dance music follows hype cycles, while a core constituency of artists ply their craft year after year, regardless of who's paying attention. Vincent has kept up a hectic release pace over the past four years. If anything, his formula—big, lumbering beats offset by dramatic yet delicate melodies—has become sharper over these recent releases, like his 2019 album World Order Music. Though he's refined his formula, it hasn't changed appreciably, and there's something comforting about that. If it ain't broke, etc. The 13-minute "Enchanted Cosmos" is a deeply revealing view into Vincent's production style—specifically the deft interplay of a handful of elements for maximum impact. On the original version, he uses disco-style arpeggiation on the bassline, which plays off a dubby stab to uncanny effect. On the reprise, he goes for a more minimal bassline, this time focusing on the lead. That synth lead is an instantly memorable synth earworm, the kind we know and love from Vincent classics like "Man Or Mistress."
