  • If you know the music of Janne Hatula, AKA Fanu, then you go to it for the drums. Lots of drums—fast, nimble, expertly chopped. His new EP, Funtroduction, is packed to the brim with 'em, and no track is as gleefully percussive than "Tracker Practice Run," which exemplifies the drumfunk choppage sound Hatula's known for with a sprinkling of jungle. Buoyed by a bassline that hits and pushes in all the right places, Hatula treats the drum breaks like a basketball player expertly dribbling a ball, before careening into a jungle-inspired section where it sounds like the track is trying to take flight, zooming through a gauntlet of dubbed-out samples. Then the track suddenly ends with a laugh, as if Hatula were just showing off (an idea underlined by the title). But sometimes, like with "Tracker Practice Run," you have a reason to show off.
