Manuka Honey - Industrial Princess

  • A very modern and inventive take on industrial music.

  • Following a few remixes and tracks on low-profile compilations, Manuka Honey makes a bold EP debut with Industrial Princess. The record astrologist and DJ embraces her taste for radical non-Western noises welded onto cutting-edge club music polyrhythms. The result ranges from gqom to modern mutations of Latin American dance music with eerie drums and spooky atmospheres, perfect for the darkest and sweatiest of dance floors. As hinted in the title, industrial music influences Manuka Honey's work through and through. But rather than a Teutonic, four-on-the-floor version of the genre, Industrial Princess reshapes the sound from modern, multi-cultural perspectives. The opening title track is rough and gritty, the grinding noises balanced by shamanistic chants and spaced-out kick drums. "Pestañas" exists in the same unusual world, this time anchored by the heaving beat of gqom, while "Diabl@" is more syncopated, layered with drums and samples of what sounds like slamming doors and paranoid sirens, calling back to the most recognizable of industrial sounds. Manuka Honey has a talent for shaping samples into new sounds: the sirens on "Diabl@" are twisted into exotic riffs, while on "Ssling," she transforms what sounds like the metallic sound effects of a sword fight into an offbeat, guaracha-style rhythm. "Ssling" is the shortest production, but it might be the most advanced, leaving you wanting more after such a brief, powerful EP. At their best, Manuka Honey's tracks are like cliffhangers in the club, always chasing the next climax, drop or plunge into silence and executing them when you least expect it.
