Equiknoxx & Kodō - Miami Vice Chancellor

  • The innovative dancehall troupe meet a traditional Japanese drumming ensemble.

  • Kodō Together, the new album pairing the Japanese Taiko drumming ensemble Kodō with the likes of Elkka and Kevin Saunderson, reads like the kind of thing dreamed up in some sort of International Olympic Committee boardroom. While the overall concept—a musical gesture of international goodwill ahead of the embattled and delayed 2020 Summer Olympics—is admirable, the results have been spotty. Jamaican crew Equiknoxx have been releasing some incredible music lately, but their contribution, "Miami Vice Chancellor," feels forced. A loping bassline, twirling woodwinds and strangely staggered percussion combine for an uninspired rhythm section, while Shanique Marie sings "Skip, skip, skip to my lou." The results are better suited for Saturday morning kids TV than the dance floor.
