- On his debut album from 2019, trumpeter Yelfris Valdés dived deep into spiritual jazz. Pairing soulful brass tones with Yoruba chants and rippling percussion, his original version of "Maktub" stands tall with an air of self-assurance. On this remix, Tom Burford, AKA Contours, holds onto the original's strength while transforming it into a playful house number with teasing hi-hats, cosmic keys and psychedelic textures. Replacing Valdes's tribal drums with acid lines and warbling effects, Contours creates a relentless groove that accentuates Valdés's original chants.
