  • Christian Jay was fusing minimal and garage on labels like Idle Hands and his own Meld well before you'd hear People Just Do Nothing jokes in places like Hoppetosse. But for his latest 12-inch and the inaugural release of the appropriately titled Drum Syrup label, he ventures into headsy downtempo territory. You still hear the influences of garage in the hip-hop drum programming, but the syncopation is sludgier, syrupy, even, belaboured as it pulls into the upbeat. The melody is equally fuzzy and lazy, happy to roll another spliff and watch the world go by.
