SPELLLING - Little Deer

  • Stunning magical realism from the Bay Area singer-songwriter.

  • Chrystia Cabral draws musical inspiration from non-musical sources, like alien life or fever dreams. On "Little Deer," her subject is Frida Kahlo's self-portrait as The Wounded Deer. Focus too much on the dainty, almost childlike vocal styling and you'll miss the weighty existential questions Cabral poses throughout. She sings of karma and rebirth with an infectious wonder that wouldn't sound out of place in some timeless musical. 17 layers of acoustic instrumentation, including a powerful horn section, are blended together for a song that steps beyond the confines of reality into something far more magical than the sum of its parts.
