  • Yu Su and Francis Inferno Orchestra have joined forces under a new alias, YUF-O. When they recorded the You Eff Ohh EP back in the summer of 2019, the circumstances of the world at large were very different—there wasn't a deadly disease roaming around, for one. But it's not as if life was perfect pre-pandemic. Both artists were in Los Angeles dealing with immigration bureaucracy woes and decided to try and escape their reality in the studio. When there's two A-game producers at play, the voice of one can become lost behind the other. Yet on You Eff Ohh, the two come through in equal measure. Having both been credited with world-building in their music—Yu Su's often more ecstatic and clear-cut, Francis's flowing in a more psychedelic haze—this EP is loaded with natural crossovers. Take "Rebuild, Recharge." The spiralling trance textures and optimistic synths feel markedly Yu Su, but the whole track rests in this lush pastelly cloud, which you might give Francis credit for. The chuggy strut of "S.O-S.A" and the elation of "Prance = Prance" make them the standout tracks of this collection, though as a whole piece, the EP unfolds with expert fluidity and story-telling from the word go. "Do You Ever D.R.E.A.M Of Flying?" is a poignant question in a world where most of us can only dream of going anywhere. It's a cliché to say a record is fitting for our current times, but You Eff Ohh hits in a way that's completely sympathetic to the now, creating a welcome new world for us to escape to.
