  • As social technology has progressed from simply sending emails to hosting livestreamed virtual events and being able to video call worldwide, it's happened through integration with the human experience. The Brooklyn-based artist Despina explores this ongoing encounter in their latest EP, Data Soft. Released via Ma Sha's Kindergarten, Data Soft follows in line with the label's previous projects—a melange of club sounds that outlines a narrative, such as Ayesha’s exploration of nature and the dance floor on the Natural Phenomena back in November. Despina uses these four tracks to portray intimate connections as experienced in the digital world. The progressive rhythms and suspenseful build-ups reflect the continuous addition of new technology to our lives, while the harsh textures betray the struggles some face with these advancements. There's a robotic feel to "Choker Release," with its artificial-sounding vocal snippets and growls above a gradually building rhythm. "Vitamin Party" instead goes straight in with abrupt drops, bouncing rhythms and overwhelming drums. This sonic narration of the relationship between humans and the ever-evolving digital world, and the conflict and disjoint that surfaces, makes Data Soft intriguing beyond its powerful club rhythms.
