- KMRU, AKA Joseph Kamaru, is known for ambient music that fosters a sense of stillness. And even when he ramps up the pace with percussion, as heard on his 2019 EP Erased, his work retains a sheer, almost translucent quality. But on this remix for Colombian producer Montoya, the Nairobi-raised artist trades that gauzy quality for hard and fast basslines. Deep and liquid with waves of complex drums that bring to mind Afrikan Sciences, KMRU's remix strikes a solemn and wistful note. A refreshing contrast from Montoya's soul-drenched cumbia electronica, this cut pushes at the edges of percussive ambient techno.
