HYYKEN - Passion Innit

  • Monki's label &Friends has become a reliable source for entertaining feel-good house—the kind you might hear on Radio 1 Dance—and Dundalk, Ireland producer HYYKEEN fits this M.O. to a tee. The A-side of his new release, "Meet Me Later," is classic piano house, but for me the B-side holds something more interesting. Focused on heavily phased vocal cut-ups and muddy basslines that land with all the giddy passion of a child stomping around in puddles, it reminds me of the most beloved late-'00s Hot Creation records, but with an impish streak and a smile. More delectable than druggy, it's the kind of house track where you find yourself singing the vocal samples halfway through song.
