Phonc - Wide Awake/Straight Up

  • Fresh from releasing Obsessive Nature by USA's Kiro and Undecided, Mob Records are proud to present another new signing to the label - the Sri Lankan based Dutchman Phonc AKA Remko Verweij. Phonc is a newcomer to the breakbeat scene and has recently released a tune on 10 Kilo and for Mob Records he delivers deep and dubby breakbeats charged up with heavy basslines and vocal samples. Side A. Wide Awake Opening up with a clean and crisp breakbeat accompanied with lots of percussion and cut up vocal samples (being very generous on the effects unit one might add!), Wide Awake is a hypnotic ride though dubby breakbeat with sleepy overtones and a dirty bassline. The vocals represent a hypnotist counting up to wake the listener from his spell while the tune progressively builds up into a whirlwind of acid electro synths and big bass stabs. Straight Up The flipside goes on another dark ride, this time with an emphasis on the bass as Phonc drops some seriously heavy bass tones on a subtle percussive break loaded with bells and bongos to give it a nice latin feel. As the tune progresses the bass gets wilder and is helped out by some weird vocal stabs and dark synth sweeps.
