  • Cork-via-Berlin transplant Ellen King has been releasing techno since 2016. She first piqued my interest as a producer with the exceptional Febreeze EP, released by Dublin's First Second label in 2019. Since then she's dropped a remix on India Jordan's RA Recommended DNT STP MY LV EP and experimented with divergent strains of techno and ambient music for Parallax Editions, Glacial Industries and Gash Collective, a group of woman-identifying and LGBTQ+ producers from across Ireland that she cofounded. If you check out Hands In The Éire, a Spotify-curated playlist featuring "the best Irish dance & electronic tracks," King is currently on the cover. Today ELLLLL returns to First Second with Housebreaker, a three-tracker of breakbeats and haunting ambience. The title track is quintessential breaks, as skittering drums and icy keys zone through an atmospheric haze to tumultuous effect. It's her best club production to date. "Atlantis Dub" takes us on a different voyage, this time to a subterranean chill-out room—at least for the first few minutes, before the breakbeats re-emerge alongside a soft ascending melody, gentler this time, but maintaining the same driving tempo. London's Parris reassembles the bones of the track into a slow, skeletal thumper that makes you want to close your eyes and step forward into a chilled bath of artificial fog.
