Kevin Freeman - Time for a Revolution

  • New release from SAW Recordings sees the opening track of Satoshi Tomiie's "ES" CD make it on to vinyl. "Revolution" is what one might expect from tech-house producer Kevin Freeman (of Sensei and Low Pressings among others) stepping up to deliver for one of house's bigger labels. And maybe we can see a 'revolution' in Satoshi's choice to start his CD with this; full of vocal samples, bright metallic percussion and many techy noises spanning acid, electro and x-number of synths, it's like a toy-chest of sound bouncing right at you, over you, and around you...this is one track we never would have expected in poll position until recently. With minor tribal influences, what this track really devotes itself to is techy enervation, complete with stutter-type edits, a slightly old-skool electro-sounding bassline, a peaking, drawn-out quivering noise right out of a 60s sci-fi B-movie, and cute synth stabs that come in near the end to keep things interesting as the hooks begin to wind down. Those jocks looking to make sure their audience are wide-awake and on their toes could find the A-side edging into their set as they start to wind the tension up. On the flip we have Guy Gerber (of recent "Stoppage Time" on Bedrock fame) laying down tight, layered, catylistic percussion over the also tightened up electro bassline, with sparing use of the many and varied original elements, including the main vocal samples "it's time for" and "revolution", which refreshingly not once get put together - but then maybe that's up to you! Techy fills and a dynamic synth line, along with well-placed edits, a short breakdown, and subtle techno hats later in the piece create energy and drive, without sending the audience to the hardware store looking for a decibel meter. A cool track to keep the the night rolling once you've got it up to speed, or to head in a techno direction, I could get into this kind of revolution.
