Later - compiled and mixed by Bent

  • Later welcome Bent (Simon and Nail) to the studio as they compile and mix the next instalment of this after hours series. Known for being totally outside the ordinary, Bent have been taken to heart throughout the world as their eclectic productions and records create the little unknown in all of us. Here we see them explore the finer points of electro, disco and the downright quirky. Starting off is Heavy Deviance with ‘Eastern Lights’ via a Neon Heights mix and is a groovy little number featuring a prominent squelching melody with spacey effects and sounds. Moving on into Wagon Christ’s ‘Saddic Gladdic’ as it takes you on a lifted journey into quirky melodies and tweaks that moves gracefully into ‘Lament For A Dead Computer Part 1’ by Furry Phreaks with its floating, echoing melodies alongside subtle basslines and futuristic sounds. Up next sees the duo’s excellent ‘Ordinary Day’ stamps its mark on the mix as its catchy vocal sample and constantly evolving sounds mesh smoothly with gorgeous melodies. ‘It’s A Fine World’ by Nail lifts the tempo a tad with minimal 4x4 beats and subtle vocal samples but its ‘Elektromotor’ by Olav Brekke Mathisen & Sideshow Jogge which shows a bit more funk enlaced with electro that brings the mix into a different view. Keeping with the great melodic feel is another gem from the Bent boys and that’s ‘Baby Of The Year’ which features sustained synths, spacey sounds and great guitar and piano samples. Kelly Polar Quartet offer up ‘The Rhythm Touch’ as they take a nice electro bassline and put it alongside strings and a group of vocalists while Mathew Johnson moves it one step further as ‘Followed By Angels’ offers a little more twang in the strings department and a nice moody electro melody. An unreleased track, ‘Keep the Faith’ by Yam Who featuring Little Rico changes the mood with a percussive groover alongside walking basslines and plucking guitar strings. Taking the walking melodies a step further is Daniel Wong with ‘Berlin Sunrise (Die Nacht)’ as an array of sounds both sustained and in motion fills the senses at each turn. Finishing off is Detroit Experiment with ‘Think Twice’ as it reaches back into the groove with classic piano chords, simple basslines and smooth beats but it’s the trumpet solos throughout that add a little twist. The experimental feel of this compilation feels totally fresh and will meet anyone looking for something with a twist. The moods will leave you longing while the highs will get you flying and is a great insight into the sounds that make up this talented duo. After hearing many after hours compilations, this one has taken me for the extra ride. Tracklisting 1. Heavy Deviance - Eastern Lights (Neon Heights Mix) 2. Wagon Christ - Saddic Gladdic 3.
