  • Another release from the Proton Music team, and another remix competition run and won. And just for a change Opencloud are involved, this time winning with their take on Formulate – Abbreviated Funk. Formulate’s (Justin Humber) Original starts with quite a chunky kick, a tease of breakbeat and then heavy drones of bass and a nice balance of atmosphere. The groove kicks on after the intro, as the stepping bass basically forces leg shaking. The progressive bent in the track along with a rather large sound make this piece a definite dance floor stormer. Opencloud’s winning Funkspell Mix is a rather busy affair. Layer upon layer of drums, effects and all and sundry are tied by a nicely driving beat. Its not till about half way through the track when there is some respite from the musical sensory overload, though that doesn’t last for long as once again we’re thrown straight back into the mix. Whilst there are clearly heaps of aspects of sound in this mix, it does hold a pretty tight line in comprehension. And when there is a break for something a little bit different, it makes it all the better. Formulate’s Original mix brings the funk in this release, whereas Opencloud’s Funkspell mix brings the mayhem. The two versions definitely offer a nice choice, clearly aided by the nice foundation laid down by Formulate in the original mix.
