Baggage Handlers – Vapourtrail (Original & Micali You Win Mix)

  • The recent release from Proton Music sees resident DJ Lance Cashion team up with the young producers Opencloud (Blake Potter and Corey Spengler) under the guise of Baggage Handlers. Joining the Original mix is a remix effort by Chris Micali. Baggage Handlers – Vapourtrail (Original Mix), starts with a driving four-four beat that gets padded out by sweeping layers and a spattering of drums. The track is good, it slowly burns and would probably be more of a travelling tune rather than a destination. There’s a constant sense of waiting for the next big thing to happen, rather than setting a vibe of paying attention to the now. Micali’s mix chugs along nicely form the start, building as the layers of melody tinkle in over the top. A darker tinged bass drone kicks in as the drums roll out, and then it’s the same fair again for the time being. A little bit of an inconsequential feel to the track, it doesn’t seem to go anywhere of note (like the Original). There is nothing offensive about it, however, and it’s a very nice uplifting prog housey take on the original that is dance floor friendly and would probably bring a smile to the club in the middle of the morning. What struck me about this release is the overall understated mood set. Neither of the tracks, the Original or Micali’s mix jump out an engaged with me. Both are quality productions, and benefit from being played loud on a good stereo, but there’s something about them that suggests background music. Not something I would have expected from the paring of two exciting producers and a just as emerging DJ talent.
