Rico Tubbs - Flashlighter/Brazillia

  • Menu music is the brand new label owned by Jay Cunning and Matt and Terry from Atomic Hooligan and the idea behind the label is to release tunes that are going to rock any party. The first release for the label comes from Finland's Rico Tubbs who also produces as Infekto on Passenger Records and was one-sixth of the Bomfunk MC's (and also their tour DJ) - one of Finland's biggest dance music exports. Side A. Flashlighter The first side dives straight into the disco funk with an infectious beat loaded with soul claps, bells and a collection of vocodered vocal samples. The bassline is introduced after the first drop and has an old skool Parliament feel about it and is reinforced by the synths that join it afterwards. A very catchy melody which should easily get stuck in peoples heads for some time. Side B. Brazillia As implied by the tune's title, this one has a distinct Brazillian feel - as if drum'n'bass DJ's Marky & XRS turned their hands to breakbeat. It's a mashup of different styles with a beat that leans toward 2-step (there's even a nice b-boy break in the middle), classic house and hip hop vocal stabs and a latin piano riff all built around a funky bassline. No matter how many times I listen to this, Flashlighter/Brazillia is a winner and should be enough to ignite any dancefloor.
