Hernan Cattaneo - Renaissance Masters Series Volume 2

  • RA Columnist and world class DJ, Hernan Cattaneo, returns for the 2nd installment of The Masters Series by Renaissance. The first mix was quite a solid effort from Hernan, and was one of many reasons why the Argentinean DJ climbed the DJ Mag poll to number 6. Not only was it a solid mix, but the mix really helped establish Hernan as a world class DJ that he is, and he is looking to do so again with the second volume in the series. The first disc is quite a smooth and soulful jouney from Hernan, displaying the smooth moody side to his DJ’ing. Its tracks like the opening effort from Belgian Pole Folder and his ‘Salvation on Slavery Skin’ the help set this mood. Early highlights include the very mellowed edit of Mike Brin’s remix of ‘Colous’ by 16B as well as the stunning Cosmos interpretation of ‘Lost In a Melody’ by Delays. The middle section gather a bit of a groove with really solid baselines and chunky drums, such as the sounds captured in ‘Machine Life’ by Patrick Turner & Chris J and of course the very chunky Asad Rivsi Mix of Harry Peat’s ‘Afrodizziac’. The mix toughens up a little towards the end and it finishes off very nicely with ‘Code 0320’ by the Bionic Rockers. The 2nd disc is where Hernan really unleashes his magic. He definitely is up there when it comes to melodic style Progressive, and this disc shows just that. It starts off yet again with another piece of magic from Pole Folder, with his remix of ‘Space Manoeuvres Pt 3’ by Quivver. Hernan & John Tonks also combine to deliver a stunning remix of Jeff Bennett’s ‘Strange Items’ as the mix starts to build up nicely. The disc is in full motion by the time it hits the stunning vocal aura of Dalegelis’ remix of ‘Come From’ by Micah, and from here on in the mix is very tasty. Hernan & John Tonks combine yet again to deliver a very delicious piece of Prog Breaks in ‘Warsaw’ which is then followed by arguably the record of the release in Nick Muir’s stunning ‘Savin’ You’. Deep driving Prog at its very best right here! The disc then concludes nicely, firstly with Derek Howells ‘Happy To Be Sad’, followed emotionally by the cute Satoshi Tomiie remix of Hybrid, and finally by Hernan’s edit of ‘Mo Move’ by the always impressive Underworld. This release comes highly recommended. You always tend to know what to expect from Hernan, which in this case is a good thing as he always delivers. The programming is top draw, and the track selection I think is a bit of an improvement since the last release. If you have seen him recently doing his thing, then this is what you will expect from this mix. Top draw Progressive, no more, no less.
