As One - Out Of The Darkness

  • Kirk Degiorgio returns ‘as one’, and seems to have mellowed even further since the last album, additionally pushing the boat out to include more styles. It’s the work of a man who’s not long become a father, and you can hear the contentment in some of the music on ‘Out Of The Darkness’, the title subtly altered from its working header, the far more pessimistic ‘Into The Darkness’. It could hardly get off to a better start. ‘Hope’ is a superb fusion of deep house and an easy breaks rhythm, with a gospel tinged vocal snapshot over the top, extremely uplifting and one of his best tracks to date. The Balearic flavourings of this spill over into ‘Leviathan’ and the strong, bass drive groove of ‘Shapechange’, as well as ‘Sanctified’ – mostly instrumental but making good use of what vocals are to hand. The vocal tracks aren’t all as effective, but nonetheless make good listening. ‘Shed Dem’ is a mellow piece of electronic soul, and the title track has a good rap in tow. Meanwhile ‘Daisy Picker’ and ‘Love Theme from the Spook Who Sat By The Door’ dispense with beats altogether but end up being a bit high on the sugar content. Still, it’s an impressive return from Degiorgio that takes a more ‘popular’ direction than his previous techno works, and shows the author to be something of a musical chameleon.
