Feral - L'Aube Rouge

  • Hypnotic, elegantly understated techno.

  • Feral's seven EPs since 2015 have all come through Sweden's ambient techno stronghold, Hypnus. For his first release away from home soil, Alessandro Barchitta mints an imprint of his own, Aube Rouge. Fans of Italian-school hypnotic techno won't find too many surprises on L'Aube Rouge, but that takes nothing away from its quality. The title track is lean and boomy, with a perfectly-formed framework and plenty of space in the mid-range for DJs to slide in something bolder. It does just enough, and that's its beauty. If the A-side is about the drums, the B-side is about the bleeps. "Négatif" is reduced and purist, channeling the vintage Robert Hood vibe into something slower and more dubby. The breakdowns are understated, but in the headspace this music creates, four bars without a kick drum is enough to make heads spin. On "Rêve," high-pitched echo trails spin a shimmering web and a bass drum lurches forward.
