  • After the release of her stripped back alt-ballad "A Friend," Ms. Carrie Stacks is back again with another powerful single, "Runnin," off her debut album, Q&A. This time, she pairs deeply introspective lyrics with boasty beats. Lush '80s synth melodies and marching drums unfold beneath echoey vocals as Carrie recites her mantra: "I've been running too long, I'm tired, I'm done, I've got to switch it up, I gotta change the rhythm." This defiant hook repeats, and as more disconcerting harmonies fade in, the drum pattern dissipates and the beat transforms. Hypnotic synths turn menacing. Crashing drums are thrown across the track. Carrie channels the defiant energy of her words and moves us from a hazy disco dance to a Harlem ballroom.
