Henzo - Not Like That, Not Like You

  • Mutant dancehall from Manchester on DJ Python's new label.

  • DJ Python built his distinctive brand of hypnotic dance music using elements of reggaeton, so it makes sense he would look for the same in artists signing to his new label. Worldwide Unlimited debuts with an EP from Henzo, a Manchester artist whose music uses similar ingredients—deep, heavy swing and lush atmospherics—but a totally different recipe. Not Like That, Not Like You has precision drum programming and a technoid sound palette more in line with British producers such as Lurka and Batu. If Henzo has a signature sound, it's a hollowed-out, serrated midrange, like the buzz of electricity itself. You can hear it on the title track, both versions of which arrange similar sounds to different effects. One is dancehall, the other is four-to-the-floor techno, both disorienting with precocious snare patterns and heavily manipulated samples. I might be more partial to "For Your Consideration," whose "Sauna Mix" is a delicious soup of dubbed-out effects, while the "Gym Mix" kicks ass with a UK garage-influenced beat. The latter's addictive swing sits somewhere in between dub, 2-step and swung tech house, which underlines the wide appeal of this EP.
