Q-Burns Abstract Message - Future/Past/Tense

  • A great benefit of being a fan of non-commercial music is the ability to see an artist go from being un-known, through the stages of development and then on to that higher level in which all artists strive to reach. This being the case, Q-Burns Abstract Message has managed focus, pay his dues, and musically mature to a level where success can be achieved. After hearing Q's newest release Future Past Tense being released this year on Eighth Dimension Records, I predict that this man will finally get thrown into the dance-music forefront. The collection of 11 brand-new remixes of artists such as Rabbit In The Moon, Maxi (feat. Colette), and Lovesky takes you on a journey that is very hard to describe besides simply saying that it's a "Must Buy" for any fan of house or ambient music. Each track is dripping with funk and style that is difficult to achieve in our electronic genre. Anyone who's seen or heard Q's mixing would know that this man accepts nothing short of perfection. Each track seems to pull together elements that compliment each other while managing to "Sit Back" on the groove all while keeping the perfect balance of simplicity and chaos. Scanning from track-to-track one will hear a great compilation of 4x4 mixed with funky breaks, wonderful vocals, satisfying melodies, groovin' bass and most importantly spirit. Q clearly did not make attempts to produce the album as if making each track blend perfectly with the one previous, rather, he seemed to approach each tune as he saw fitting while giving each piece it's own character and attitude. From a dance floor perspective it is noteworthy to highlight that Q seems to achieve a feeling of "lag" in his drum programming. The drums seem to sit back and let the music "take over". This talent is showcased on tunes including Fila Brazilla's "We Build Arks" and Jugoe's "Night Fumblings". This is something we've all become familiar with through our experiences with house music, but it's different here as Q manages to do it at only the right times as to keep things moving on during tunes where it may seem out-of-place. With the impressive line-up of originals gathered together for Q's interpretation on this album it is suggested that any fan of electronic music pick this one up if for nothing else than an education as Q-Burns Abstract Message has helped push the envelope forward just a little bit.
