Amazondotcom & Siete Catorce - Vague Currency

  • A brilliant mix of traditions from two of experimental club music's most electrifying producers.

  • Amazondotcom made waves with her incredible Mirror River EP last year. The LA producer has the restless cross-genre itch of so many of her peers, but explores it with a focused approach that centres both dub and dubstep. The opening track on her new split EP with Mexican producer Siete Catorce is a case in point, with its skronky dubstep wobbles, carefully syncopated percussion and synth leads massaged to sound like birdsong. The mixture of spacious sub-bass heft and thick midrange bass on "Glances" has become Ahn's trademark, all of it balancing on supple and subtle drum arrangements. You'll also find satisfying wubs on Amazondotcom's "Cigarettes" and on the duo's collaborative track "Shells," another high-watermark on the EP. Its topsy-turvy bassline makes for an especially bumpy ride. Siete Catorce's solo tracks are even more influenced by dub, particularly "Seeds" and its snare hits drenched in delay. These sound effects and playful touches make the tracks appealing, but they're only part of the story. It's the rock-solid and unpredictable rhythmic frameworks that really takes Amazondotcom and Siete Catorce's quietly experimental work to the next level.
