  • Rizu X lives between the US-Mexican border cities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, while Katerina resides in Helsinki, two locations that seem worlds apart. But they both make off-the-wall, creative techno, which makes this split EP on Cómeme a welcome team-up, following in the footsteps of fantastic (and weird) recent releases from Joe, Gladkazuka and label founder Matias Aguayo. I've never quite heard techno as Rizu X puts it together. The melodic elements alternate between thin and reedy or thick and textured (synth notes blurt out like ripping velcro on "Rub It"), with heavy, often syncopated drums swaying below. The drum patterns remind me of the music of NAAFI, from further down south in Mexico City, but there's also a Detroit sensibility to her compositions, a sepia hue that separates her from the experimental club pack. Katerina's two excellent tracks also have a whiff of the Motor City to them, especially the excellent "Bizarro World," which pairs a Juan Atkins-style bassline with discordant melodies, like techno gone Twilight Zone.
