- Slacker—not to be confused with the late prog house legend—was inspired to make Mists Lift, his third EP, after returning to his hometown and working with at-risk children. The fundamentals of his sound, lithe and precise drum & bass, are still there, but now they're wrapped in velveteen synths and rich synth-scaping that make Mists Lift more ambient than drum & bass.
The fantastic opening track "For Cecilia" is entirely beatless, with painterly melodies that impress strong emotions without resorting to maudlin clichés. Melodies soar in the background for all of Mists Lift, sometimes coalescing into trance-influenced chord progressions ("Longmarsh") or long sighs of spacey synth, like on "Into Other," which recalls the astral beauty of ASC at his best. Throughout, the drums are nimble, light and graceful, rounding off an EP of ambient drum & bass that focuses on personal expression.
